Athlete or not, we’re always practicing. Always.

Ever say things like this to yourself: “Why do I keep doing that?” or “I’ll do it tomorrow…” or “I’ll start Monday.” What happens? These phrases somehow end up on repeat, right?

What we’re doing here is we’re practicing. And of course, practice anything long enough and you’ll master it.

This happens throughout the day. We are reflections of what we practice. Whether it’s consistently telling our spouse how much we love and appreciate them or making sure all of the lights in your house are off when you leave for the day. Practice doesn’t make “perfect”, it makes routine.

For professional Ironman athlete Jason Pohl, his daily routine, what he practices regardless of what life throws at him, is the reason he was able to push through and make it to that Aid Station.

“I train anywhere from 30-35 hours per week doing 25,000 yards of swimming, 300-400 miles on the bike, 40-60 miles of running, and three strength sessions,” Jason says.

You might not be training for an Ironman… you might not be an elite athlete. But you’re still practicing. Each time you make a choice, you’re practicing making more choices just like that (good or bad). So, the question is: What do you want to practice or “train for” in your life?

Jason’s hamstrings cramping during the run portion of the Ironman wasn’t the only time he had to pivot…

“I was about 80 miles into the bike segment and noticed that I lost one of my water bottles,” he says. “So I started to get dehydrated pretty fast. When that happens, your muscles weaken and don’t perform at a high level (if at all).”

Jason’s pace started to slow and other competitors began passing him. “It was discouraging but again, I had to go into problem-solving mode instead of panic mode,” he says.

To make it to the next aid station, Jason kept a pace that wasn’t too slow, but wasn’t too taxing on his dehydrated muscles either. He rationed what little water he had left, and it worked!

“My legs came back quickly after that, and I was able to catch back up.”

After all the adversity he went through at the Ironman Coeur d’Alene, Jason Pohl placed fourth—qualifying him to compete in the coveted Ironman World Championship!
